Your new role

As Principal Operational Technology (OT) Architect you will be responsible for the design and assurance for Operational Technology architecture of all roadside technology and control room systems as used by Highways England. lead at the highest level and are responsible for ensuring the strategy is agreed and followed. You will be responsible for leading the OT strategy and ensuring it’s effective delivery, working on the enhancements of existing systems looking at implementing future developments. You will network and communicate with senior stakeholders across organisations and proactively seek out opportunities for digital transformation as well as supporting multiple teams, finding and using best practice and emerging technologies.

The IT Architecture Design & Technology Solution team are based in Birmingham and Bristol, for the right candidate we will consider other locations, however regular travel would be required when necessary and subject to COVID restrictions, and on occasion this could be International.

What you’ll be leading on

  • Lead, direct and motivate a team of Subject Matter Experts
  • Working closely with SES Research colleagues on future proofing and deploying new technologies to the benefit of our customers and reviewing the impact
  • Drives innovation ensuring capabilities are significantly improved
  • Develop technical standards, policies and architectures to provide enhanced capability, more reliable services to our customers and improved safety to those installing and maintaining roadside technology.
  • Provide technical governance and assurance across all Operational technology projects developed in all parts of Highways England. This includes reviewing business cases and high level designs and enforcing technical policies, standards and architectures.
  • Provide technical support to a wide range of projects using both agile and waterfall project management methodologies.

To be successful

  • Experience of technically leading programmes of work, making all the significant decisions that affect technology choices and solution strategy, ideally with IET or BCS accreditation
  • A good understanding of the hazards of the road environment and the design decisions and methodologies that are deployed in mission-critical operational systems to meet strict safety, availability, resilience or latency related requirements
  • Ability to work collaboratively to gain involvement and engagement, with a range of colleagues and key stakeholders both in the wider organisation and externally
  • Exceptional communication skills to convey complex information to a wide audience and influence as necessary
  • Knowledge of roadside environment specifications / standards and the interactions between technology requirements and legislative documentation such as the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and the Traffic Signals Regulations, Guidance and Directives.
  • Development and authoring of technical and outcome based specification requirements.
  • Some experience across the particular technologies in use by Highways England; such as: NMCS2, CCTV(VIH), HATMS and CHARM or Experience of wider Intelligent Transport System technical frameworks such as: UTMC, NTCIP, DATEX2
